The final day of action in Sochi saw SKA confirm its supremacy throughout the week, while in Nizhny Novgorod fans enjoyed two tight battles as the Governor’s Cup continues.
Spartak edged Dynamo in a shoot-out in Nizhny Novgorod after an exciting 4-4 tie, while SKA made it three wins from three in Sochi with victory over Lokomotiv.
A famous name is back in business as Tretiak backstops Dinamo Riga to victory with two penalty shot saves. Elsewhere, Red Star fires blanks again in Sochi and Avtomobilist impresses without its star names.
The Sochi Hockey Open continues, with Nail Yakupov taking just 34 seconds to get his first goal for SKA. Sunday also saw the start of the Nizhny Novgorod Governor’s Cup, and here too there were encouraging signs from new arrivals at Dynamo Moscow and Avtomobilist.
Day two of the Sochi Hockey Open saw two of the KHL’s traditional powerhouses pick up victories. Ak Bars shrugged off its opening night loss to defeat a Russian representative team, while SKA eased past HC Sochi in the evening game.
The first action in the Sochi Hockey Open brought victory for Lokomotiv over Gagarin Cup winner Ak Bars before Kunlun Red Star took the verdict against the host club.
Friday sees the start of the summer’s first pre-season tournament, the Sochi Hockey Open. Once again, the shores of the Black Sea welcome some of the strongest teams in the KHL – and offer a chance to check out the next generation of Russian international stars.
