Russia wins bronze, Anttila inspires Finnish gold rush
Russia finished its World Championship campaign with victory over the Czech Republic in the bronze medal game, making it three third-place finishes in the last four years. In the final, Finland defeated Canada 3-1 with Jokerit forward Marko Anttila scoring twice to turn the game around.
Russia reaches semi-final, Finland lies in wait
On a day of tight battles and tense finishes, Russia edged the USA 4-3 to reach a World Championship semi-final against Finland. The Finns needed overtime to defeat Sweden 5-4, tying the game in the dying seconds. Canada had a similar struggle against Switzerland, levelling the scores at 2-2 with 0.4 seconds left on the clock. The Czechs had an easier time of it, defeating Germany 5-1.
Perfect Russia leads the way
Russia wrapped up its group stage campaign with a big win over Sweden – and completes Group B with a perfect ‘7 from 7’ record. That sets up a quarter-final against the USA in Bratislava on Thursday. The Czechs will face Germany, while Canada won Group A and takes on Switzerland and a Finland vs Sweden clash in Kosice completes the pairings for the last eight.
Kucherov double keeps Russia unbeaten
Two goals from Nikita Kucherov maintained Russia’s unbeaten run at the World Championship – and lifted the forward back to the top of the tournament scoring charts. Kucherov scored in the second and third periods of Russia’s 3-0 victory over Switzerland, and the Red Machine had its fourth shut-out in six games as it continues to dominate Group B in Bratislava.
Russia stays perfect, Latvia’s hopes end
The first game of a busy World Championship program in Slovakia saw Russia come from behind to beat Latvia. The 3-1 scoreline ended Latvia’s hopes of making the last eight, while Russia is still undefeated in five games. The Russians are now three points clear at the top of Group B after Switzerland’s 100% start came to an end at the hands of Sweden.
Russia gets ready for Latvia
Saturday’s program in Bratislava kicks off with Russia, unbeaten in four games, taking on a Latvian team in desperate need of victory. After seeing a 2-0 lead turn into a 3-6 loss against the Czechs on Thursday, Bob Hartley admitted that his team now had no choice but to beat Russia and Switzerland if it was to reach the quarter-finals for the second successive championship.
Darzins double can’t save Latvia
Lauris Darzins scored two goals for Latvia as Bob Hartley’s team threatened an upset against the Czechs. But the Baltic nation ran into penalty trouble, with two players ejected from the game, and the Czechs rallied to win. Sakari Manninen got Finland’s game-winner against Denmark, while Sweden piled up the goals against Austria.
Russia romps to record win
Alexander Ovechkin scored his first goal of the Championship as Russia crushed Italy 10-0 to power to the top of the Group B table in Bratislava. The team has won all four of its games and has shut-outs in the last three. Switzerland is level on points with Russia after a 4-1 win over Norway.
The KHL in Slovakia: two wins for Russia, three goals for Lander
Russia made it two wins from two with Evgeny Dadonov leading the way once again – but not everybody was content with the Red Machine’s performance against Austria. Latvia, meanwhile, went down to a 1-3 loss against Switzerland. Lokomotiv’s new signing Anton Lander enjoyed Sweden’s 8-0 victory over Italy – the 2018 Gagarin Cup winner potted a hat-trick.
