Tournament hosts beaten
Monday saw two tournaments start, and two host teams defeated on opening day. The Chelyabinsk Governor’s Cup saw Amur beat Traktor 3-0, while Ak Bars won 3-2 in overtime against SKA at the Puchkov Tournament. Elsewhere, Sibir ended the Blinov Cup with a win, and CSKA defeated Dynamo in a Moscow derby.
Trophy for Severstal, rebuild for Shanghai
Pre-season action is well underway, with big crowds turning out for the latest warm-up games. Severstal lifted the Blinov Cup in Omsk in front of more five-figure crowds. We’ve seen most teams in action, but Shanghai Dragons are yet to play – when they do, they’ll bring a radically reshaped roster after a week of busy transfer action.
Avangard and Severstal set for Blinov Cup decider
Avangard handed Bob Hartley a 3-0 loss on his return to Omsk as head coach of Lokomotiv. That keeps the Hawks unbeaten in their home tournament. Severstal also has three wins from three after sinking Sibir, and the two will meet on Sunday to decide the champion.
Winning start for Avangard at Blinov Cup
The second summer tournament began in Omsk, and Avangard got the opening day win over Sibir on home ice. The Hawks needed a shoot-out in the their Siberian derby, though. Earlier on Wednesday, Severstal opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Lokomotiv and Spartak beat Torpedo in an entertaining warm-up game.
Boucher sinks Salavat, CSKA stutter in first game
Reid Boucher produced the pre-season performance of the day with a hand in all three goals as Avtomobilist won 3-0 in Ufa. CSKA made its first appearance of the summer, but Igor Nikitin suffered a 1-4 loss at Dinamo Minsk on his return to action as the Muscovites’ head coach. Lada edged a shoot-out win over an experimental Ak Bars roster in Tuesday’s third game.
Metallurg wins first trophy, Dragons confirm head coach
The first pre-season tournament of 2025 went to Metallurg, triumphant at the Minsk Cup. Shanghai Dragons unveiled a World Championship-winning head coach and announced their first players for the coming campaign. SKA also made big signings, while Barys began its rebuild.

Flying start for Metallurg
Magnitka played its first pre-season game at the Minsk Cup, and started in style with a 6-0 thrashing of Lada. Fringe players Pavel Tyutnev and Igor Nechayev led the way with two goals apiece. In Thursday’s warm-up game, Ak Bars beat Neftekhimik 4-1 in front of almost 8,000 fans in Kazan.
