Leonids Tambijevs’ men picked up a victory in their first pre-season engagement of the summer. Up against VHL opposition in Molot, they secured the win with a couple of third-period goals.
The game was played in Belarus, where the Sailors have assembled for their summer camp. The first line-up was without some prominent names, notably Daniil Gutik, Stepan Starkov and Pavel Shen. However, there was room for new signings Kyle Olson and Igor Geraskin.
Olson wasted little time in opening his account. A misplaced pass in the fourth minute set the Canadian forward on his way to the net and he needed no second invitation to pot his first goal in Admiral colors. However, Molot was not prepared to roll over, and tied the game on a goal from Ivan Pirogov.
The middle frame brought no more goals, but saw another new Admiral player, goalie Dmitry Shugayev, take over between the piping.
The final stanza brought two goals from Dmitry Zavgorodny to settle the outcome. First he scored a shorthanded effort, then made it 3-1 on the power play. The forward might have ended with a hat-trick, but after beating the goalie on a late one-on-one, he fired his shot against the post.
