KHL.ru continues its club-by-club review of the 2024/2025 season. For Dynamo Moscow, finishing second in the Western Conference set up a tough path through the playoffs. Nonetheless, the Blue-and-Whites made it through two rounds before falling to Traktor for the second season in a row. This time, though, it was a first semi-final since 2013.

CSKA wins Mayor of Moscow Cup
The first day of the fall brought an end to the KHL pre-season program. CSKA won the final tournament of the summer, defeating Spartak in a shootout to lift the Mayor of Moscow Cup. Elsewhere, a goal from Severstal’s Adam Liska helped Slovakia beat Kazakhstan and secure its place at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.

Saturday’s action was all about setting up the deciding games at the Mayor of Moscow Cup. CSKA defeated Torpedo, and will take on Spartak for gold after a dramatic finish to the Group B schedule. Torpedo finished second in Group A, and will play Dynamo Moscow for third place. The 5/6 playoff sees Vityaz face Avtomobilist.
Amur wins Chelyabinsk tourney, Neftekhimik takes Romazan prize
Two more tournament winners were confirmed on Friday, with Neftekhimik securing first place at the Romazan Memorial in Magnitogorsk while Amur defeated Traktor to collect the Chelyabinsk Governor’s Trophy. In Moscow, Torpedo defeated Vityaz and Dynamo beat Avtomobilist at the Mayor’s Cup. The day’s sole warm-up game was a high-scoring affair as Lokomotiv edged Severstal in a shoot-out after a 5-5 tie.
SKA wins Puchkov Tournament
In Petersburg, the summer tournament came to an end with SKA and Russia U23s going to a shoot-out. That was enough for SKA to secure the title once again, even though it lost the shoot-out. In Moscow, meanwhile, the final contest of the summer was just starting and there were two more shoot-outs to be decided. CSKA edged Vityaz after a 2-2 tie before Spartak and Dynamo shared six goals ahead of a Red-and-White success .Admiral won Thursday’s only warm-up game, defeating Belarusian team Metallurg Zhlobin 2-0.
