This season, Foo has accumulated 25 points in 38 games, comprising 14 goals and 11 assists, with a plus-6 rating.
This performance marks his best season to date. His efforts have been instrumental in Kunlun Red Star’s recent eight-game winning streak, propelling the team into contention for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The team’s recent victories, including a 3:0 win against CSKA on Jan. 10, have improved their standing.
Born on May 19, 1994, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Spencer Foo began his career in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Bonnyville Pontiacs from 2012 to 2014. During his tenure, he amassed 97 points, showcasing his offensive prowess especially in the second year.
Foo then advanced to collegiate hockey, joining the Union College Dutchmen in the NCAA. Over three seasons, he developed into a key player, culminating in a strong junior year where he recorded 26 goals and 36 assists for 62 points in 38 games. This outstanding performance earned him a nomination for the Hobey Baker Award.
Following his successful collegiate career, Foo signed with the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL) as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He made his NHL debut during the 2017-2018 season, appearing in four games and scoring two goals with the Flames. However, the majority of his time in North America was spent with the Stockton Heat, the Flames’ American Hockey League affiliate.
In 2019, following two productive years in Stockton, Foo made the strategic decision to join the KHL, signing with Kunlun Red Star, the league's only Chinese franchise. His move was influenced by his Chinese heritage and the opportunity to play a pivotal role in promoting hockey in China, especially with the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on the horizon.
Foo’s impact was immediate. In his debut KHL season (2019-2020), he tallied 25 points in 48 games, including 11 goals and 14 assists. After three seasons with Kunlun, however, he returned to North America for the 2022-2023 season, joining the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL. During this stint, he recorded 14 points in 60 games, with 6 goals and 8 assists.
Demonstrating loyalty to Kunlun Red Star, Foo returned to the KHL for the 2023-2024 season. Since his return, he has been an integral part of the team’s offense, consistently leading in scoring and providing veteran leadership to a roster with a blend of international talent.
A significant milestone in Foo's career was his participation in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Representing China, he played a crucial role in the national team’s efforts on home ice. Although the team faced formidable opponents and did not advance past the preliminary round, playing on such a scene was certainly impactful on his career and experience.
The 2024-2025 season has been a career-best for Foo. His 14 goals lead the team, and his 25 points rank him first in overall scoring for Kunlun Red Star, tied with Slovakia’s Tomas Jurco.
His offensive contributions have been complemented by a responsible defensive game, as evidenced by his plus-six differential.
Foo's performance has been particularly impactful during the team’s recent eight-game winning streak. His ability to deliver in crucial moments has been instrumental in the team’s success. As Kunlun Red Star vies for a playoff spot in the Western Conference, Foo’s leadership and scoring touch will be essential in the remaining games of the regular season.
