Spartak Moscow 2 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 1 (0-0, 1-0, 1-1)
Despite a four-game losing streak, Lokomotiv head coach Igor Nikitin refrained from wholesale changes ahead of his team’s trip to Moscow. Ivan Bocharov took over from Danill Isayev in goal, and young Daniil Tesanov, out of action since late September, returned to the fourth line.
Spartak welcomed back Shane Prince and Roman Lyubimov after they missed the defeat at home to CSKA in the previous game. Lyubimov made his 500th KHL appearance today.
For most of the first two periods, this was a tale of wasted power play chances. The teams alternated penalties, but neither side could take advantage. Lokomotiv was the livelier offensive threat, but Spartak created the better scoring chances on its forward forays.
It wasn’t until late in the middle frame that the deadlock was broken. Spartak converted its fourth power play of the game (admittedly, not every power play lasted the full two minutes as penalties often came one after the other). Alexander Khokhlachyov made the breakthrough, firing home from the middle of the zone.
After the opening goal, the teams cut back on the penalties and played a more disciplined game until the closing stages. Lokomotiv, unsurprisingly, worked hard to get back into the game, but neither team was able to create a clear chance for long periods.
Then, five-and-a-half minutes before the hooter, Andrei Loktionov took a tripping penalty to give Lokomotiv one more power play chance. Nikitin called a time-out and Artur Kayumov found the tying goal.
Having let down his team-mates with the penalty, Loktionov then emerged to save the situation. First he won a puck battle on the boards, then a few seconds later he got on the end of Timur Khairullin’s pass to score the decisive goal. Lokomotiv managed to get the puck into Spartak’s net one more time during a late storm on Patrik Rybar’s net. However, the officials ruled that the goal came after the final hooter and Spartak took the verdict.
Vityaz Moscow Region 3 CSKA Moscow 4 OT (0-1, 1-0, 2-2, 0-1)
There was a dramatic finale in Balashikha. Just when it seemed that CSKA had done enough to secure a victory over Vityaz, Nikita Goncharov grabbed a quick-fire double to wipe out the visitor’s 3-1 lead. His efforts earned a tie for Vityaz before Vladislav Provolnev secured the verdict for the Muscovites in the extras.
Victory sees Sergei Fedorov’s team move to within seven points of table-topping SKA. CSKA also has two games in hand on the pacesetters, while in Petersburg a run of indifferent form has shown that Roman Rotenberg’s team can be beaten despite its impressive start to the season.
Today, CSKA made a fast start to the game. Kamenev opened the scoring on two minutes, finishing off an odd-man rush alongside Maxim Mamin. However, the visitor was unable to capitalize on that early breakthrough. Vityaz more than held its own in the opening frame, and might have tied things up before the intermission when Kirill Rasskazov went close to putting away a rebound in front of Adam Reideborn net.
Reideborn was beaten early in the second period when Vladislav Kara tied the game. Stanislav Yarovoi’s shot thundered into the boards and Kara reacted fastest as it bounced back to the danger zone. CSKA went on to have the territorial advantage in the middle frame but could not convert that into goals. Indeed, the closest we came to another marker was at the other end, when only Reideborn’s lightning reactions kept out Stepan Starkov’s redirect after Rasskazov crashed in another shot.
It looked like CSKA had done enough to win the game when Kamenev and Mingachyov scored in quick succession to build a 3-1 lead in the 57th minute. However, that was just the start. Goncharov took matters into his own hands, scoring two goals in 37 seconds to tie the game at 3-3 and take us into overtime. Remarkably, the 23-year-old had previously scored just three goals in 91 KHL games.
However, Goncharov’s efforts would not go fully rewarded. Although his team picked up a point for the tie, Vityaz was unable to ride that momentum to victory. CSKA played most of the overtime period without a goalie, but did a masterful job of controlling the puck and denying Vityaz possession and the chance to shoot at an empty net. Finally, Provolnev grabbed the winner with 41 seconds left to play, scoring on the eighth shot at Maxim Dorozhko in the extras.
