The creative team was inspired by the work of fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh. Throughout his career, he tried to portray his subjects as naturally as possible. Lindbergh’s style was revolutionary: world-renowned celebrities appeared in normal clothes, stripped of their make-up and without lavish hairstyles. Lindbergh questioned the obsession with glamor and urged an ideal of beauty derived from the women’s personalities. His black-and-white portraits uncovered the soul of their subjects, expressing their power before our eyes.
Revealing the personalities of the players became a recurring theme for the 2021 WHL calendar. The viewer discovers the story of each player, the images highlight their character, passion and love of their game. For the 2021 calendar, each player wears a plain white shirt, focusing attention on their faces. The key to each shot is the eyes and facial expression. Each photo is accompanied by a quote from the player, which also helps us to understand her inner world. Each quote, prefaced by the hashtag #anotHERview, reflects the views of each girl.
Unfortunately, it was not possible to include any representatives from our Chinese team, KRS Vanke Rays, due to time constraints imposed by the pandemic. However, the designers included a Chinese accent. In the Chinese language, days of the week are usually represented by numbers — 1 for Monday, 2 for Tuesday etc. And that is echoed in the calendar where, instead of names, the day is indicated by the appropriate number next to each date.
The WHL issues a calendar every year. Each year brings a new concept — in the past, players have been presented as fantasy heroines from the Norse sagas. The 2021 edition represents a new direction and can be purchased from the KHL’s online store.
