Avangard Omsk finds a temporary home in Moscow Region.
Following news that Avangard’s Arena Omsk was not ready to stage KHL games in the 2018-19 season, the club informed the league that it would find an alternative venue. In response to this unexpected event, the KHL Board of Directors worked closely with the club to ensure that all the necessary requirements were fulfilled. Options included three arenas – one in Krasnoyarsk, Central Siberia, and two in Moscow Region in Mytishchi (once home of Atlant) and Balashikha (once home of MVD). After assessing all three, the team chose Arena Balashikha – which already meets all the technical requirements laid down in the KHL rule book – as its home arena for the coming campaign.
Georgy Kobylyansky, KHL Hockey Operations Vice-President:
- We faced a problematic situation in which Avangard quickly had to find a new arena so as not to miss the coming season. In the end, the selected option will be ideal for the team, their fans and the League. Despite this temporary transfer, we are sure that Avangard will not lack for support in the months ahead. The move will, of course, complicate the team’s logistics and the flight plans of the other teams in the competition. We hope that other teams and their fans will understand. I would also like to highlight the fact that Avangard intends to stage some outdoor games at home in Omsk.
