The Kontinental Hockey League has released a list of all the current KHL players representing their various countries at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, and the bare statistics provide eloquent testimony to the truly international nature of the League. As of February 6th, 46 KHL players in all, comprising 5 goaltenders, 14 defensemen and 27 forwards – 15% of all players selected – will be on duty for 7 of the 12 competing nations in the battle for Olympic gold.
A total of 16 of the League’s 28 clubs are represented.
There are some surprise absences from the list: none of the current Metallurg Magnitogorsk roster is on show, for example, although Magnitka fans will rightly point out that the city and club gave Evgeny Malkin and Nikolai Kulyomin to the world of hockey, and Spartak fans will no doubt remind us that Ilya Kovalchuk began his career at the Red-and-Whites.
Patriotic Vityaz fans can boast that former Chekhov D-man Andrei Markov has made the roster, Severstal supporters will likewise remember Evgeny Medvedev and Viktor Tikhonov at Cherepovets, Amur is similarly represented by its former goalie Alexander Yeryomenko, while Atlant fans will reserve a special cheer for the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Fyodor Tyutin,
Finally, the nostalgic ones among us who yearn for the return of Lada to the KHL can take some comfort in the fact that Evgeny Malkin and Alexei Yemelin both had spells at Togliatti during their long and illustrious careers, albeit before the era of the KHL.
