Born in the town of Salavat, about 165 km south of Ufa, Rodion Amirov joined the Salavat Yulaev system as a youngster. A skilled left winger, he progressed through the Junior League with Tolpar and led Russia U18s in scoring at the 2019 World Championship, coming home with a silver medal. That summer, he also won bronze at the Hlinka / Gretzky tournament with Team Russia.
The following season, he made his KHL debut for Salavat Yulaev in the club’s opening game. He would go on to play 79 games in the KHL, scoring 18 (10+8) points.
However, in 2022 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Despite the best efforts of surgeons in Russia and Germany, that illness ultimately cost the youngster his life. He was just 21 years old.
Following news of Amirov’s death, Salavat Yulaev released the following statement on social media.
“With great sadness, we must inform you that one of our own has departed this life – Rodion Amirov, a young and talented forward. Rodion was a strong, kind-hearted and joyful man. He battled against serious illness for a long time. Despite all his difficulties, Rodion was always alongside the team, a big part of our hockey family. He was always in contact, calling to congratulate the guys on their victories. He was with us through all the ups and downs.
“Rodion Amirov will always be in our hearts. A young and talented player, and a wonderful person.”
In 2020, Amirov was selected by the Maple Leafs at #15 in the 2020 NHL Draft. The following year he signed a three-year entry-level contract, and was then loaned back to Salavat Yulaev to continue his development in familiar surroundings.
As news of his passing emerged, the Toronto club’s president Brendan Shanahan released the following statement on its social media:
“The entire Maple Leafs organization is devastated by this tragic loss. Over the duration of his courageous battle, Rodion’s positivity inspired everyone around him and he made lasting impressions with our team and fans in his brief visits to Toronto.
“It is incredibly sad to see a young man with so much promise taken from us so soon. We offer our deepest condolences to Rodion’s family and friends as we mourn this loss together.”
