To mark the end of the sixteenth week’s play of the ninth season of the Championship, the Kontinental Hockey League has named the best players of the week in four categories. Owing to the Channel One Cup, a mere seven teams were in action over the past seven days, and four of these only played once, but the League nonetheless decided it would be right to honor those sportsmen who performed better than any other in their position.
– Best goaltender was Tomi Karhunen (Kunlun Red Star), who played in two matches and celebrated victory in both. The 27-year-old Finn ended the week with a save percentage of 93.94 and a goals against average of 1.97, plus he entered the history books by helping the Chinese team to triumph in the League’s first-ever 3-on-3 overtime;
– Best defenseman was Mikhail Grigoryev (Admiral), who starred in his team’s win over Neftekhimik. The 25-year-old D-man spent 23 minutes 49 seconds on the ice, fired off 4 shots, blocked two from the opposition, and ended the game with 3 points (0+3) and a +5, the highest efficiency rating of any player in his team;
– Best forward was Artyom Gareyev (Avtomobilist), who scored 4 goals despite only having two outings. The 24-year-old attacker hit a hat-trick against Kunlun Red Star (accounting for all his team’s goals in that game) and his other strike, against Amur, turned out to be the game-winner. Gareyev also added three more hits to his season’s total;
– Best rookie was 21-year-old Admiral forward Vladimir Tkachyov (Admiral), whose figures after the Far East men’s win over Neftekhimik stood at 3 points (1+2), 5 shots at goal, a rating of +2, and 17 minutes 4 seconds of ice time.
