The Far East Derby returns as Admiral and Amur clash again
Admiral and Amur meet in the second Far East Derby of the season as the regional rivalry continues. The Sailors triumphed in the first encounter with a resounding 5:0 road victory, showcasing a dominant first-period performance. Admiral looks to end a five-game skid, while Amur, fresh off a long-awaited win over Barys, aims to keep their momentum. Later, Barys faces Avangard, Metallurg hosts Sibir, and Dinamo Minsk takes on Avtomobilist in a packed matchday of KHL action featuring four exciting clashes.
The matchday will start with the second Far East Derby in the season between Admiral and Amur. The first contest took place in early November, with the Sailors emerging victorious in a crushing 5:0 road win. Vladivostok’s victory was fueled by a lightning-fast first period, where they scored four goals, and a stellar performance by Jack Rodewald, who contributed three points (2+1). This will be the 53rd KHL derby between Admiral and Amur. Currently, the Sailors holds the edge over Khabarovsk with a 29-23 record. Most recently, Amur finally snapped a fourteen-game losing streak, achieving a long-waited win in Astana (3:0), with young goalie Viktor Kobozev earning his first KHL shutout at only his third start. Admiral, instead, lost five straight matches, and will be looking for a return to victory as the team slipped down to sixth place in the Conference standings.
Then, Barys hosts Avangard. The Kazakhs suffered from their loss to Amur, while Avangard defeated Admiral on Thursday (2:1). The Hawks shuffled their roster, with several moves across all the positions, including dissolving Darren Dietz’s contract after the defenseman only netted one goal in eighteen appearances with the team’s jersey. It’ll be the third time the teams meet this season, with the sides swapping wins so far. In the Eastern Conference’s standings, Avangard has a four-point advantage over Barys, with both teams outside the playoff picture.
Another contest at the third edition for the season is Metallurg facing Sibir. After two straight wins over Lada (2:1 SO) and Salavat Yulaev (3:2 OT), Magnitka sensationally fell to Barys (1:2), while Sibir had a road win over HC Sochi on Friday (4:2). On Nov. 9, Scott Wilson netted the game-winner for Metallurg, who got its revenge after a 3:4 loss earlier this season. Currently, Metallurg is the fifth seed in the East, while Sibir maintains a spot in the playoffs, being now in eighth place.
The action then moves to the Western Conference for a single game, with Dinamo Minsk welcoming an injury-plagued Avtomobilist. The Bisons only had two wins in their last five matches, and in their last game they blew away a 3:0 lead against Dynamo Moscow as they failed to celebrate with a win their 1,000th KHL game. The Motormen, instead, are in second place in the Eastern Conference, but are currently in a two-game skid, with losses against Neftekhimik (1:3) and Kunlun Red Star (1:2 SO). Both teams will be seeking a return to victory.
