Vadim Shipachyov with another chance at all-time scoring record
On a busy KHL matchday, Vadim Shipachyov will have another chance to write history as he has just tied Sergei Mozyakin’s all-time scoring record. Today, Dinamo Minsk hosts Barys, and another five games are on tap on an action-packed KHL Monday.
After surpassing Evgeny Biryukov for the most games played in KHL history, Vadim Shipachyov can also finally become the league’s all-time top scorer today, as he tied Sergei Mozyakin’s scoring record of 928 points on Saturday. Today’s opposition will be Barys—the Kazakh team sits at the bottom of the standings, giving Shipachyov a strong chance to reach his historic milestone as he needs just a single point. The Belarusians defeated Neftekhimik on Saturday, on Shipachyov’s 1,002nd league appearance, with the forward picking up an assist on Brady Lyle’s powerplay tally in the game’s closing stages. Lastly, today’s confrontation will be the 900th career game for Dinamo Minks’s head coach Dmitry Kvartalnov. He has an impressive 558-300-41 record in his career, split between Severstal, Sibir, CSKA, Lokomotiv, Ak Bars, and Dinamo Minsk.
The matchday will start with a game in the Far East, with Admiral hosting Spartak as the team ends a four-game home series. The Sailors have just bounced back after three straight losses with a win over Lada on Sunday (5:3), while the Red-and-Whites recovered from a 0:5 blanking by Dynamo Moscow defeating Avangard (6:5) and Amur (5:4), with Nikolai Goldobin celebrating his 100th KHL goal. Scoring abounded in these games, so today there will be another chance to see several tallies scored, but goalies will not be happy, most likely.
In Novosibirsk, Sibir will host Traktor. The Chelyabinsk side is one of the top teams in the league, and won its previous couple of matches, accumulating four wins in its last five games. Most recently, Traktor defeated Ak Bars (3:1) and Salavat Yulaev (4:2) at home as the teams starts a short road trip today. On its hand, Sibir just lost to Severstal (2:4) at home and was defeated by Traktor in its last six home games. Despite the losses, leading forwards Valentin Pyanov and Sergei Shirokov are on an active scoring streak. Moreover, Canadian forward Taylor Beck is about the return from his injury.
The action then moves to the Western Conference, with a classic matchup between Lokomotiv welcoming Dynamo Moscow. Both teams are in good shape, with the Railwaymen gathering two straight wins and the Blue-and-Whites winning their last three games. Lokomotiv is currently leading the league, while Dynamo Moscow is slowly returning to playoff places after a slow start. Unfortunately for the Muscovites, forward Maxime Comtois is now sitting on the injury list after a positive period.
In the Moscow Region, Vityaz will host SKA. The St. Petersburg franchise is now third placed in the West, with three straight wins as SKA starts a new road trip. Newly-signed defenseman Anthony De Angelo is currently on a six-game scoring streak, further highlighting his skills and his importance to the team. Vityaz seems also to be in good shape, with four wins in the last five matches, including triumphs over Lokomotiv (2:1) and Metallurg (2:0).
Then, Kunlun Red Star hosts Metallurg. The Dragons lost their most recent couple of matches, against Lokomotiv (1:5) and HC Sochi (0:4), respectively, while Metallurg just lost to Vityaz (0:2). Kunlun Red Star will try to return to scoring as the team just netted one tally in its last two matches.
