Shipachyov looking for two records today
The veteran forward has a unique chance to establish two records in the same day as Dinamo Minsk takes on Neftekhimik for Shipachyov’s 1,002nd league appearance, finally surpassing Evgeny Biryukov for the most KHL career games. Moreover, he’s just one point shy of Sergei Mozyakin’s all-time scoring regord—927 points against 928.
All the eyes will be on Minsk today: the seasoned forward has a rare opportunity to set two records in a single day as the Bisons face Neftekhimik for Shipachyov’s 1,002nd league appearance, which would put him ahead of Evgeny Biryukov for the most career games played in the KHL. Additionally, he is just one point away from tying Sergei Mozyakin’s all-time scoring record—927 points compared to 928. Shipachyov could already beat Mozyakin’s record two days ago, in his 1,001st game, but Metallurg and Ilya Nabokov had a shutout win, leaving the forward pointless. Today’s opponent will be Neftekhimik. The Wolves lost their previous three games and will be looking to bounce back, so Shipachyov and Dinamo Minsk will have to work hard to celebrate.
The KHL matchday will start early in the Far East, with the second game between Admiral and Lada. Two days ago, the Togliatti franchise had a commanding win, sending six goals to the Sailor’s crease—five of them in the third period. A similar scenario will be the background of the Khabarovsk’s game. Amur lost to Severstal on Thursday (1:2), and today Spartak comes to town. Andrei Martemyanov’s team will need to battle hard to return to victory and please the home crowd.
In the last game in the Eastern Conference, Severstal moves to Sibir after its win over Amur. Both teams won their last encounter, and the teams have already met this season, with Sibir celebrating a 5:2 win. Both sides are doing fairly well in the standings, so a certain unpredictability is to be expected. Moreover, both Sibir and Severstal will be without a key import player, with the Novosibirsk side having Taylor Beck sitting on injury list, and the Steelers being without key defenseman Ioannis Kaldis. It will be the first game in more than a week for Sibir.
In the West, Vityaz hosts Metallurg. After a series of good performances, the Moscow Region side suffered from a home loss to Avtomobilist (1:3) on Thursday, and today’s opposition will be tough. Magnitka had a strong game in Minsk – on Thursday too – and Ilya Nabokov showed to be not only one of the best goalies in the league, but also in fine shape.
But not only Metallurg can boast a hot goalie. Dynamo Moscow’s most recent game was a 5:0 blanking of Spartak in the Capital Derby, with young goalie Maxim Motorygin posting a 29-save shutout, his second of the season. The Blue-and-Whites will travel to Nizhny Novgorod, where they will face Torpedo, who is now sitting in fifth place in the West. Dynamo Moscow is barely in the playoffs places, so the game tonight will certainly be a tough one for both squads, well determined to win. On a side note, after a difficult start of the season, guests’ forward Maxime Comtois is currently on a four-game scoring streak.
In the latest game of the matchday, Lokomotiv hosts Barys. The Astana franchise keeps on being on the bottom of the standings, and most recently parted ways with three imports – Nathan Beaulieu, Will Butcher, and Michael McLeod. The team will now start a three-game road trip as the head coach Vyacheslav Butsayev has also stepped down, with Galym Mambetalyev taking his place. Lokomotiv, on the other hand, bounced back after an unexpected loss to Vityaz, defeating Kunlun Red Star 5:1 in an away match. The Railwaymen have now a five-point advantage over the second seed in the Western Conference, SKA, and have the most points in the league, 28.
