Metallurg looking to stretch its winning streak, CSKA faces Salavat Yulaev
Metallurg hosts Dynamo Moscow seeking its fourth straight win. Five games are on tap as ten teams hit the ice on an exciting KHL Tuesday. CSKA will be looking for a return to victory when the Moscow club hosts Salavat Yulaev.
Metallurg had an excellent short tour in Moscow, defeating both CSKA (7:0) and Spartak (5:2), and today the Gagarin Cup champion faces the third team from the Capital, Dynamo, but this time on home soil, where they will play the next four games. They also won the previous game, against Lada (2:1). The Blue-and-Whites won their last game, with Maxim Motorygin shutting out Vityaz on a 3:0 road win. Earlier, however, they lost two straight matches, to Traktor (1:4) and CSKA (3:4 SO), respectively. It will be a very interesting game to start the matchday.
In today’s second match, Neftekhimik continues its four-game home series, and so far, it has been flawless for the Wolves with victories over Lada (3:2 OT) and Amur (4:1). Additionally, Neftekhimik’s point streak has now extended to four consecutive games, making the hosts one of the main contenders chasing the top three in the Eastern Conference. Amur, on the other hand, is six points behind and currently outside the coveted top eight—can the Tigers defeat Oleg Leontiev’s squad on their second attempt and close the gap?
On the Black Sea shores, Sochi has gained quite a good momentum. Following two solid home victories against Severstal (1:0) and Admiral (5:0), the squad achieved success in a game against Dynamo Minsk (3:2). The next opponents will be guests from the Moscow region, who traveled to the Black Sea coast after suffering a shutout loss at home to Dynamo Moscow (0:3). In the standings, the rivals are direct competitors, each having earned ten points—both currently sit outside the playoff zone. Vityaz has already defeated Sochi this season, but the Black Sea franchise has won its previous six games against the Moscow Region side.
Severstal and Dinamo Minsk have already exchanged victories this season (3:2 – 1:3), with their last meeting taking place just over a week ago on Sept. 29. Since then, the Steelers have faced HC Sochi (0:1) and SKA (4:3), just like the Bisons, who suffered a shutout loss to the St. Petersburg team (0:3), followed by a defeat on the Black Sea coast (2:3). Dmitry Kvartalnov’s team has been quite inconsistent in attack this season and currently sits in eighth place in the Western Conference with 12 points. Severstal, on the other hand, has two points more, and won its previous five home games against the Bisons.
Finally, CSKA hosts Salavat Yulaev. The game in Moscow will be the 200th in the league for the visiting head coach Viktor Kozlov. His players will try to deliver a gift in the form of a win against CSKA, who have fallen into a slump. Ilya Vorobyov’s team has suffered two consecutive shutout losses to Metallurg (0:7) and Traktor (0:4), and it’s likely that the CSKA lineup for the next game will undergo significant changes. Salavat Yulaev heads to the Russian capital after a home defeat to Kunlun Red Star (2:5). The visitors are hovering on the edge of the Eastern Conference playoff zone, although they have played fewer games than the other teams in the conference. Despite their recent struggles, CSKA remains in the top four in the Western Conference standings.
