Second Siberian derby of the season

Preview
Two games in the East, two games in the West, with plenty of anticipation for each of the contests. Emotions and drama will abound as the KHL matchday features four matches, with each of the eight teams hitting the ice seeking a win to either rebound back or build on past victories. Another derby is on tap today, with Sibir hosting Avangard as the teams face for the second time this season.

The KHL matchday starts early in the Far East, with Amur hosting Kunlun Red Star. The Tigers had a rocky start, but then won twice in a row and they return to Khabarovsk seeking a third victory. The Dragons had the opposite path, with two straight losses—they’ll be traveling to the Far East trying to return to victory.

In Novosibirsk, the fans will be treated to the second Siberian derby this year when Avangard comes to town trying to repeat its 2:1 win in the season’s opener on Sept. 4th. The Hawks had three straight wins to start the 2024-2025 campaign before losing to Amur after SO on Wednesday, while Sibir achieved its first victory in the new season on Thursday, with Vladimir Butuzov potting a double in an away win over Severstal. It will be Avangard’s first away game this season. With top players Vladimir Tkachyov and Reid Boucher sitting on IL, young Ilya Reingardt took the reins forward, scoring five points in the first four games of the 2024-2025 campaign.

The action then moves to the Western Conference. SKA will try to return to victory tonight as they face Lada for the second time this month. The first clash between the two sides was the only win the St. Petersburg powerhouse celebrated so far this season, with two consecutive losses failing to score. The Togliatti side, instead, had two straight wins, against Dynamo Moscow and Vityaz, after losing two consecutive games at the start. Lada’s Ostap Safin has been in fine shape and will be one of the players to watch for the guests today.

In the last game of the matchday, Dynamo Moscow will face Dinamo Minsk. The two sides are in opposite situations, with the Muscovites having won only once this season, while the Belarusians impressed on the start with three wins in four games, and several top-line players showing a great shape already in September. This game will be interesting for both sides – Dynamo Moscow will want to show that they are better than what their season record suggests, while the Minsk franchise is seeking confirmations and yet another win to keep on climbing the Western Conference standings.
