CSKA with a chance to book a playoff ticket!
Before the season started, probably CSKA didn’t expect to be in sixth place in the West by the end of January, but for the Sergei Fedorov’s guys it is what it is, and they now have a chance to get to the playoffs yet another time as the Red-and-Blues only once missed this achievement, back in the 2010-2011 season. Today, CSKA hosts Torpedo as the teams meet for the third time this year, and they can clinch their playoff spot in case of a victory, but also if Vityaz loses to Kunlun Red Star in regulation. Moreover, the Igor Larionov young guns have lost their previous couple of matches.
The matchday will however start earlier in the Eastern Conference, with Barys hosting Avangard as the Kazakhs seek their first victory after five straight losses. Then, in Chelyabinsk, the next round of the Ural Derby will take place. Traktor and the Motormen are very close in the standings – and so are Lada and Ak Bars – so this rivalry match will become even more intense due to the necessity of gaining points at all costs to break out of this tight group.
Special attention in the lineup of Traktor should be paid to Maxim Shabanov. He is having an excellent season, and his lacrosse goal, which was also the game-winner in the game against Avangard was something extraordinary. Throughout the season, Traktor has won three out of five meetings against Avtomobilist. However, in the last game, it was the Motormen who secured victory with a 4:3 score.
The action then moves to the Western Conference. HC Sochi welcomes Dinamo Minsk. The Bisons lost several players down the road, yet they won their latest two matches and have also defeated HC Sochi twice this season. In another exciting game, Spartak hosts Lokomotiv as the teams face for the third time in the 2023-2024 campaign, with the Railwaymen taking both games so far. However, the Red-and-Whites found back a couple of key players recovering from injuries, and it will be a nice battle in Moscow. A showdown between Kunlun Red Star and Vityaz will close an exciting KHL Wednesday.
