The 2023 Fonbet KHL All-Star Game will take place at the new SKA Arena in St. Petersburg on Dec 9-10. The event will feature the participation of the league’s top players and coaches. For one of the world’s largest ice arenas, which can accommodate 21,500 spectators for hockey games, this will be its first major event.
Symbolically, the SKA Arena is located on Yury Gagarin Avenue, and the primary concept behind its design was the theme of space. Associations with space are evoked by the facade of the arena, its interiors, and many other details. The ice rink can be transformed to accommodate any modern hockey size, with the front row of the stands positioned close to the boards to immerse the spectators in the game. Pre-game shows will be illuminated by the largest media cube in Europe, and 3D projections will be displayed on all surfaces of the arena.
The KHL All-Star Game took place in St. Petersburg for the first time in February 2011, hosted by the Ice Palace, and the arena was packed with enthusiastic fans. The northern Russian capital has a deep love for hockey, as one can see from the usual sold-out crowds at SKA’s home games. It’s no surprise that the city holds the record for the highest attendance at a KHL game: on Dec 22, 2018, SKA played against CSKA at a football stadium, attracting a staggering 66,770 spectators.
The Women’s Hockey League All-Star Game and the JHL Challenge Cup will be held a week earlier in Tula. The ice palace, which can accommodate over three thousand spectators, was inaugurated in August 2020. The city is home to three professional teams: the senior AKM team and the youth teams Akademiya Mikhaylova and AKM Junior.
