There was a hockey festival on Red Square as the annual New Year Game between two select rosters — Friends of the KHL and Friends of MasterCard — took place in the very heart of Russia’s capital.

Beneath the Kremlin walls, the KHL’s select line-up included some famous names from the past. Three Gagarin Cup winners graced the team — Vladimir Antipov, Maxim Goncharov and Sergei Mozyakin. The latter was joined by his son Andrei, who memorably made his KHL debut for Metallurg last season playing on the same line as his illustrious father.

The team also including several of the brightest stars of the Women’s Hockey League, with Maria Sorokina in goal, joined by Nina Pirogova, Angelina Goncharenko and Ekaterina Ananina on defense, plus forwards Olga Sosina, Anna Shokhina and Elena Dergachyova. Chief referee Artyom Anisimov captained the team.

The opposition had some famous names of its own: Alexei Yashin potted two goals on the night, former Russian football international Dmitry Sychev was also on target as Team MasterCard jumped to a 5-1 lead. However, in temperatures of −10C, Team KHL hit back. There was a big contribution from Russia’s female stars, who shared four points between them and, according to Ananina, shook their male teammates out of some early complacency. Then, in the closing minutes, the game was won and the baton passed from one generation to the next. Mozyakin Jr, 20-year-old Andrei, showed that he has inherited some of his father’s goalscoring instincts when he potted two goals in 14 seconds to give Team KHL a 6-5 victory.

It’s really cool to play in the heart of Moscow. I’m grateful for the invitation, thanks to the KHL and Mastercard for inviting us girls and putting on such a great show. It was cool, it was fun, we were crazy for it! We had an unusual long rink, it was cold and windy, so everyone had to give their best!

Ekaterina Ananina, defense, SKIF and Team KHL

It wasn’t easy to play on such a big rink, normally its used for public skating, but the whole thing was a positive experience — especially after we managed that comeback. Even at 0-4, I was certain that we would win. I think the men on our team were taking it easy at the start, then started to play when we were losing. It was a great atmosphere, everything was super.

The event, which was organized with the support of MasterCard, the KHL’s long-term commercial partner, is a fundraiser for Russian charity Liniya Zhizni (Life Line), which is raising money to help children with serious illnesses.
