To mark the end of the fifth week’s play of the tenth season of the Championship, The Kontinental Hockey League has named the best players of the week in four categories.
– Best goaltender was Ilya Ezhov (Neftekhimik), who posted the goalie's perfect week: one game at home, one on the road, and not a single goal allowed. Yezhov's unbeaten spell between the pipes now stretches to 162 minutes and 30 seconds;
– Best defenseman was Patrik Hersley (SKA), who helped the Petersburg Army Men claim two victories in two road games, contributing 5 (2+3) points – the highest total for Week 5 of any defenseman in the League. The experienced Swede earned a positive rating in both outings, finishing the week with a +3, and he has now scored at least one goal in each of his last four matches;
– Best forward was Jiri Sekac (Ak Bars), who made four outings and helped his team claim win three wins (two of which were on the road), firing off 12 shots and recording 9 (5+4) points. The Czech forward's mighty points haul – the highest total of any KHL forward over the past 7 days - included a hat-trick and game-winner against Dinamo Riga and a double at Slovan, and he did not receive a single negative rating on his way to earning a +5 for the week;
– Best rookie was 19-year-old SKA forward Mikhail Maltsev, who played alongside Hersley in both road victories, averaging 8 minutes 32 seconds on the ice. He yielded a positive rating in each match to end the week at +4, and in providing the killer pass for a goal at Ugra young Mikhail notched the first point of his KHL career.
