In the first minute of Sunday’s match in Ufa between Salavat Yulaev and Sibir Novosibirsk, home defenseman Maxim Goncharov (№57) received a minor penalty (2 minutes) for kneeing.
After reviewing the episode, the KHL Disciplinary Committee decided the foul should be upgraded to one of injuring an opponent by kneeing, and as a result, has imposed on Goncharov a major plus game misconduct penalty (5+20 minutes), a fine, and a two-game suspension.
In the 58th minute of the same game, Goncharov was again guilty of causing injury by illegal use of the knee, for which the referee handed out a major plus game misconduct penalty. The Disciplinary Regulations state that a player who receives a second 20-minute penalty incurs an automatic one-game disqualification for repeat offending.
Maxim Goncharov is therefore banned for a total of three games.
