The KHL Disciplinary Committee has investigated the unruly scenes which broke out a mere 13 seconds into Monday’s game in Kazan between Ak Bars and Barys Astana. Following a brawl between visiting defenseman Damir Ryspayev and home forward Alexander Svitov, Astana coach Andrei Nazarov was sent back to the locker room after he angrily remonstrated with Svitov and hurled a bottle of water at the Kazan player.
The Committee upholds the minor plus game misconduct penalty (2+20 minutes) handed to the Barys coach by the officials for unsporting behavior from a club official, and has imposed a further punishment of a three-game suspension. As this was Mr. Nazarov’s second 20-minute penalty of the season, following the game misconduct he received in September’s game against Admiral, he incurs an additional one-game ban for repeat offending. Andrei Nazarov is therefore banned for four games.
The Committee also imposed a game misconduct penalty (20 minutes) on Alexander Svitov for being the aggressor in the brawl. In addition, both clubs were fined a sum of 100,000 rubles (approx. $2,200) as both Svitov and Nazarov were deemed to be guilty of behavior which could provoke disorder among spectators. The Committee also issued a warning to Mr. Nazarov that a repeat of such conduct in the future could lead to his being disqualified from coaching.
