The Gazprom Export team of hockey veterans, captained by KHL President Alexander Medvedev, played two exhibition games in New York over the weekend.
The first game, staged at the Chelsea Piers Arena, finished in a 10-5 victory over a New York team of veteran professionals, who boasted six-time Stanley Cup winner Mark Messier in their ranks, as well as Mike Krushelnyski, Darius Kasparaitis, Ron Duguay, and Ferraro twins Chris and Peter.
Fair play was ensured by the renowned American referee Paul Stewart, currently working as the KHL President’s refereeing consultant, and the game was played in such a good spirit that he only needed to send one player, Vyacheslav Fetisov, to the bad boys’ bench.
The second game was played at the New York Rangers’ training arena and the visiting veterans from Russia triumphed again, this time celebrating a 7-4 win against a team from the New York Fire Department, reinforced by a number of former hockey pros. In addition to Alexander Medvedev and Vyacheslav Fetisov, HC Gazprom Export’s line-up included Alexei Kasatonov, Jari Kurri, Alexei Yashin, Maxim Mikhailovsky, Igor Varitsky and other stars of world hockey history.
