At the end of the shootout series which decided Wednesday’s game in Khanty-Mansiysk between Yugra and Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, home team goaltender Mikhail Biryukov was penalized for spearing, following an altercation with Avtomobilist’s Fyodor Malykhin. The Russian international goalie appeared to react angrily to the forward knocking the puck into the net after his first shot had rebounded back off the post.
The KHL Disciplinary Committee has reviewed the incident and upholds the referee’s decision to hand Biryukov a major plus game misconduct penalty (5+20 minutes).
Offenses of this nature can incur an additional suspension of up to three games. The Disciplinary Committee, taking into account all the circumstances in this episode, has decided to impose on Biryukov a one-match ban.
In the 29th minute of Wednesday’s game between Spartak Moscow and Salavat Yulaev, Ufa forward Igor Mirnov received a minor plus misconduct penalty (2+10 minutes) for checking to the head or neck area.
After reviewing this incident, the Disciplinary Committee has overturned the referee’s decision and rescinded the penalty against Mirnov.
