On June 4th the office of the Kontinental Hockey League was the venue for the 2010 KHL Entry Draft. First overall pick was Dmitry Yashkin (born 23.03.1993), formerly playing in the Czech Republic for Slavia Praha juniors, chosen by Sibir. In season 2009/10 the young forward collected 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists).
The player rated number one by the KHL scouting bureau, graduate of Traktor hockey-school Maksim Shalunov, was picked by the Chelyabinsk club as fifteenth choice, while the No. 1 in the European ratings, Swedish attacker Ludvig Rensfeldt, went to Salavat Yulaev as 23rd pick. In all, through seven rounds of the draft, KHL clubs selected 188 players from 13 countries: Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Canada and the USA.
During the ceremony the clubs took advantage of their right to taking first pick of graduates from the clubs’ own hockey-schools in 25 of the selections.
Later the KHL central information bureau has announced the cancellation of three selections made by KHL clubs:
- the selection by CSKA of attacker Mikael Backlund (Sweden),
- the selection by Sibir of defenseman Philip Larsen (Denmark) and
- the selection by Lokomotiv of attacker John Tavares (Canada).
The selections were annulled due to all three players having professional contracts with clubs in the NHL.
