With the end of the first week of the championship, The Kontinental Hockey League has named the best players of the week in four categories.
- The best goaltender of the week was Vitaly Koval of Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. In the first week of the new season he played two games, saved 44 shots and did not allow a single goal. His team was victorious on both occasions;
- The award for the best defenseman went to Lucas Krajicek (Dinamo Minsk). Minsk’s new Czech import played in four games and assisted on one of his team’s goals. He did not receive a negative efficiency rating from any of his four outings, and he finished the week at +4. Krajicek’s average ice time was 21 minutes and 55 seconds;
- The best attacker was named as Igor Grigorenko of Salavat Yulaev (pictured). The forward played in three games, scored five goals and added one assist. One of his goals sealed victory for his team, and Grigorenko’s rating for the week was +2;
- The award for the week’s best rookie went to Metallurg Novokuznetsk forward Mikhail Fisenko. The 21-year-old played in two games and scored one goal, which turned out to be the game-winner; he earned a +2 and spent an average of 12minutes and 53 seconds on the ice.
The players of the week awards are based on statistics supplied by the statistics and analysis department of the KHL’s information bureau. The best rookie award is open to those players, goaltender or skater, born in 1989 or later, who have played no more than 20 games in previous Russian championships. The player must also have appeared in no fewer than half of his team’s games during the relevant playing week.
