Back to our roots

30.05.2010

The Kontinental Hockey League, the National Hockey League, and the National Hockey League Players' Association have ratified an agreement to stage two exhibition games between teams from the KHL and the NHL in October of this year.

On October 4th, the Saint Petersburg Ice Palace will be the venue for a game between SKA of Petersburg and the Carolina Hurricanes, and on October 6th the Arena Riga in the Latvian capital will host a game between Dinamo Riga and the Phoenix Coyotes.

The last time teams from the National Hockey League paid a visit to Russia and Latvia was back in September of 1990, when the Montreal Canadiens and the Minnesota North Stars played eight games against teams from the USSR championship.

Dinamo Riga, back in the days when they played in the Soviet championship, played a total of nine games against clubs from the NHL, with a record of 2 wins, 6 defeats and one game ending in a tie. SKA have only twice faced opponents from across the ocean and were on the losing side on both occasions. In all, there have been 108 games played in Super Series between clubs from the USSR and the NHL, and the overall record shows 58 victories for Soviet clubs, 40 for the North Americans, and 10 games failed to produce a winner.
