Less than a week after the departures of Sandis Ozolins and Igor Zakharkin from, respectively, Dinamo Riga and Ugra, the first coaching casualty of October has been named as Alexei Kudashov of Lokomotiv.

The Yaroslavl club has announced that the contracts of Mr. Kudashov and his assistant, Alexander Savchenkov, have been terminated by mutual agreement, and that Dmitry Kvartalnov has been appointed as head coach, with Igor Gorbenko stepping in as his assistant.

Dmitry Kvartalnov, whose playing career included a spell for the Boston Bruins from 1993-94, was relieved of his duties as head coach of CSKA at the end of last season, when the Moscow Army Men were eliminated by Alexei Kudashov's Lokomotiv.
