Gagarin’s Epic Journey Begins

One of the most popular traditions to have evolved in the Kontinental Hockey League’s short history is the extended midseason tour of the Gagarin Cup, in which each member of the winning team may take the most coveted trophy in European hockey home to show his fellow townsfolk, friends and loved ones.

This year, the silverware’s summer vacation began yesterday, when three of the victorious SKA Saint Petersburg side – Yury Alexandrov, Maxim Chudinov and Vadim Shipachyov – accompanied the Cup to Vologda Region and the city of Cherepovets, home to HC Severstal, in whose hockey school the trio first learned to ply their trade.

The local heroes showed their gratitude by proudly putting the Gagarin Cup on display at the Cherepovets Ice Palace, thereby giving fans the chance to have their pictures taken with the trophy, chat with the players, and, of course, add some treasured autographs to their collections.
