League leadership meets to tackle the future

17 July 2014, 22:50

The Kontinental Hockey League’s Moscow headquarters was the venue for a series of high-level meetings on Tuesday, and a number of decisions were made in regard to the forthcoming season and beyond.

Among the wide range of financial issues and plans which came under scrutiny, one important detail was confirmed: the salary cap for the new season is to remain at 1.1bn rubles (a little over $31.5m), and the salaries of players currently on contracts signed as part of last season’s permitted exemptions will remain outside the wage ceiling.

The most interesting development regarding the game’s long-term future was the decision to create a working group to cooperate with representatives of the People's Republic of China, a strong candidate to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. This group will promote the development of hockey in the region and evaluate the prospects for a Far East Division in the KHL Championship.

One of the most pressing issues is the format of the forthcoming season, and the League management carefully studied a proposal submitted by the clubs for a double round-robin tournament, in which each club plays every other club once at home and on the road, plus six more games within the divisions. This plan was ruled out on economic, logistical and practical grounds, not least because of matters beyond the League’s control, such as the heavy burden on many arenas to host cultural and other non-hockey events.

Here is the 2014-15 KHL Championship schedule:
Stage 1 - Regular Championship
Stage 2 - Gagarin Cup Playoffs Guidelines

Another item on the agenda was the election of a new Board of Directors, as a result of which the top management structure for the VII season of the KHL is as follows:
