Salavat Yulaev leads the series 3-2

A tight victory for Barys denied Salavat Yulaev a series victory and set up Game 6 in Ufa on Saturday.

The home team knew that nothing less than victory would do, and set out to play attacking hockey from the off. Barys consistently outshot Salavat, admittedly helped by a rising penalty count against its opponent, and the margin of victory might have been more comfortable had it not been for some solid goaltending from Andrei Vasilevsky – from a soccer-style stop to deny Dustin Boyd late in the first period to a vital block on Brandon Bochenski’s solo break five minutes from the end.

But the young goalie could do little with the two goals that went past him. In the eighth minute Konstantin Rudenko opened the scoring, squeezing his shot home from an acute angle after Roman Savchenko’s slap shot rebounded off the boards.

The second goal, late in the second, came on a breakaway: Boyd applied the finish to give Barys a slender victory and keep the series alive.

In between those strikes Ivan Vishnevsky fired home from between the hatchings off Alexander Stepanov’s pass from behind the goal to tie the game up in the first, but Salavat Yulaev could not find a way to settle the series at this first time of asking.
