(4) Salavat Yulaev 2

(5) Torpedo 1

Salavat Yulaev wins the series 4-3

Salavat Yulaev completed the line-up for the conference semi-finals, edging a 2-1 verdict at home to Torpedo in Game 7 of the last remaining series.

The Ufa team was up against it in the first period, with Torpedo topping the shot count 14-3 but failing to find a way past Andrei Vasilevsky between the piping. But the second session reversed that trend as the visitor ran into penalty trouble early on.

Igor Mirnov opened the scoring on the power play in the 23rd minute with a slap shot and five minutes later Sergei Zinovyev doubled the advantage with a shot which somehow found a path through a crowded slot and sneaked past Ivan Kasutin.

Torpedo was presented with a golden chance to reduce the deficit when Yegor Dubrovsky was penalized for throwing his stick at Denis Parshin. Parshin’s penalty shot was saved by Vasilevsky, however.

Parshin did claim an assist soon afterwards, picking out Sergei Bernatsky all alone in the deep slot for a thunderous one-timer that gave Vasilevsky no chance.

A scoreless third period saw Salavat aim to keep play as tight as possible, looking to strangle the play and deny Torpedo a clear sight at goal. Despite managing just one shot on goal, the home team thus prevailed to set up a series against Barys starting on Friday.

Today’s game was prefaced with sad news. A coach carrying Torpedo fans to the game had been involved in a road accident which left one supporter dead and several others injured.
