The KHL Disciplinary Committee has studied two of the incidents from a fractious third period in Game 4 of the Sibir versus Ak Bars series, played on Wednesday evening in Novosibirsk.
In the 53rd minute, Ak Bars defenseman Stepan Zakharchuk left the players’ bench to take part in a tussle which had erupted around the visitors’ goal, for which he was sent to the locker room by the officials. The Disciplinary Committee has upheld the referee’s decision to award a major plus game misconduct penalty (5+20 minutes) for leaving the players’ bench and has imposed the appropriate three-game suspension on the player as stipulated in the Regulations. As Zakharchuk had already earned a 20-minute penalty during the regular season, he also incurs an automatic one-game suspension. Stepan Zakharchuk is therefore banned for four games.
The Committee also decided that the 53rd-minute major plus game misconduct penalty (5+20 minutes) handed out to Sibir forward Nikita Kvartalnov should remain in place, but that the offense should be recorded as one of participating in a brawl after the officials have intervened, instead of abuse of match officials and unsporting conduct.
