Mezei banned for 4 games

In the 51st minute of Monday’s game in Yaroslavl between Lokomotiv and Vityaz, Moscow Region defenseman Branislav Mezei was sent off for the remainder of the game after deliberately using his elbow to stop home forward Daniil Apalkov from advancing on goal. The KHL Disciplinary Committee has upheld the referee’s decision to punish the hit with a major plus game misconduct penalty (5+20 minutes) for causing injury by checking to the head and neck area, and has imposed on Merzei an additional ban of three games.

Taking into account the player’s previous game misconduct penalty for a similar foul on Torpedo’s Denis Parshin back in December, the Committee has added a suspension of one game for repeat offending. Branislav Mezei is therefore banned for a total of four games.
