Ovechkin treble sinks Donbass02.12.2012
For fans of Donbass Donetsk, the visit of Dynamo Moscow – Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and all – was akin to the city’s football team welcoming the stars of Barcelona and Chelsea in recent seasons. But while Shakhtar’s footballers have already claimed Chelsea’s scalp in Ukraine, Dynamo was determined not to suffer the same fate.
Instead, a first period masterclass highlighted the gap in class between the league’s newcomer and its defending champion: two goals for Ovechkin, three in total, and the hosts had cause to fear a heavy defeat.
But even if Donbass has found life tough at times in its KHL debut season, it remains a tough proposition at its cramped Arena Druzhba home. And, buoyed by a win over SKA St. Petersburg during the week, the Ukrainian side battled back hard. Tuomas Kiiskinen pulled one back just after halfway, and Evgeny Dadonov’s short-handed effort on 45:06 made it 2-3 and sent a surge of renewed hope around the 4,000-strong crowd. Dynamo, however, has plenty of experience of closing out a tight game, and secured some much-needed breathing space through Ovi’s empty netter to win 4-2.
