To mark the end of the first week’s play of the fifth season of the championship, The Kontinental Hockey League has named the best players of the week in four categories.
– Best goaltender was Sergei Borisov. The Spartak netminder played in two games, both victories, earned one shutout, allowed just one goal (averaging 0.5 per game) and saved 98.4% of shots;
– Best defenseman was Janne Jalasvaara. Dynamo Moscow’s Finn had three outings during the week, supplied the passes for four of his team’s goals and earned an efficiency rating of +3;
– Best attacker was Mikhail Varnakov. The Torpedo forward took part in two games, scored three goals and assisted on one more, earning a rating for the week of +2;
– Best rookie* was Amur defenseman Igor Ozhiganov, who featured in three games and spent an average of 21 minutes and 21 seconds on the ice.
The best rookie award is open to those players, goaltender or skater, born in 1991-95, who have played no more than 20 times in previous Russian championships. The player must also have appeared in no fewer than half of his team’s games during the relevant playing week.
