In the wild north

On April 7, KHL President and Gazprom Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev joined Stanislav Tsygankov, the General Director of OJSC Severneftegazprom, in a visit to Russia’s Far North to attend a training session by the pupils of Geologist hockey club in the village of Urengoy, and to present gifts of hockey equipment to the youngsters.

The Geologist hockey club and school is unique: a place where three hundred children learn the hockey trade under the guidance of qualified coaches at a state-of-the-art skating rink close to the Arctic circle, beyond the 65th parallel, in Urengoy - a village with a population of around ten thousand in the Pur region of Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. The Geologist school has teams of various age groups, and thanks to the high level of organization in Urengoy these teams achieve consistent success in competitions at district, regional, national and international level.

“No victory, whether at international level or in the KHL championship, is possible without a talent for hockey of the kind cultivated at junior and youth sports schools,” - said Alexander Medvedev. “We are fully aware of the importance of supporting children who have decided to dedicate themselves to this wonderful sport, who dream of breaking into the national team and of bringing glory to the sport at the greatest international competitions. That is why the Kontinental Hockey League devotes a great deal of attention to development of hockey for children and juniors. I believe that our joint efforts at every level of our hockey - from the KHL clubs to junior clubs in the Far North - will bring great results.”

“Caring for the younger generation, creating favorable facilities for training talented athletes as well as providing development and support of sport is an vital component of the social policy of our Company,” - Stanislav Tsygankov added. “Through our support we hope to awaken the interest of young people in the game of hockey and in a healthy lifestyle, and to give them a chance to choose a good and healthy way of life.”
