Neftekhimik, after a 2-1 shootout victory over Metallurg Magnitogorsk, claimed first place in the group, and the Nizhnekamsk men will play Alexander Barkov’s “Magnitka” again in the final. Doing battle for third place will be Traktor and Avangard. Today’s meeting between the two sides ended in a 4-2 win for the Omsk men.
Dynamo crush Spartak
In the second round of games of the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Cup, Dynamo Moscow inflicted a 5-1 hammering on Spartak. The Red-and-Whites even opened the scoring on 10 minutes, but the Blue-and-Whites equalized just 12 seconds later, and from then on they did not give Spartak a chance of fighting back. In the second game of the day Torpedo beat Metallurg Novokuznetsk 2-0, with Vitaly Koval earning the first shutout of the tournament.
Severstal, currently training in Switzerland, have now lost two out of two friendlies on their trip. This time Dmitry Kvartalnov’s men were guests of Lugano, and the hosts won 5-2. Lehtonen and Panshin scored the KHL team’s goals. The Cherepovets men have two more games left on their tour.
Barys beaten, SKA victorious
More news from Switzerland: the preseason Basel Summer tournament has got under way, and two KHL teams are taking part. In the first game Barys went down 3-5 to Finnish JYP Jyväskylä, with Boyd, Starchenko and Kaspar scoring for the Astana men. Barys allowed the fifth goal after replacing the goaltender. Petersburg’s Army Men fared much better, handing out a 7-0 thrashing to the hosts. Denis Denisov started the rout in the first period, Gleb Klimenko and Maxim Rybin scored in the second, and in the final third Petr Prucha, Fedor Fedorov, Maxim Afinogenov and Kirill Koltsov also hit the target.
Vůjtek in charge
Vladimír Vůjtek, famous in Russia for his work with Lokomotiv, Ak Bars and Dynamo Moscow, has been appointed head coach of Slovakia’s national team. Vůjtek’s will prepare the team for the next World Championships and then the Sochi Olympics. Hockey fans may remember that Vladimír wanted to end his coaching career when he left Dynamo Moscow.
On trial in Khabarovsk
Amur have given tryout contracts to defenseman Andrei Kruchinin and forward Evgeny Korotkov. Kruchinin wanted to spend the coming season with Severstal, but the Cherepovets club would not offer him a full contract. Korotkov spent last season playing in the colors of CSKA, but after 33 outings he only had a single assist in his account.
Petersburg’s Army Men continue to strengthen their roster. The latest player to sign a contract with SKA is Igor Makarov, who has spent a long time trying to establish himself in North America. The forward has, however, managed to play in the KHL, clocking up 100 games for SKA and Dynamo Moscow, scoring 15 goals and assisting on 12 more. Makarov was at his most prolific in the first season of the KHL, when he hit 9 goals for the Petersburg men.
Ready for action
There have been elaborate preparations for the new campaign in Yaroslavl. At the Arena-2000 it was decided to replace the video cube. The old one, after ten years on duty, was showing its age and the display was not bright enough. In addition, illuminated scoreboards will be installed all along the upper perimeter of the stands.
The players have also been busy, meeting the fans at an open day in Yaroslavl. One of the events was a “Master-Show” skills competition, during which Robert Dietrich proved to be the team’s fastest player.
