Torpedo’s new captain was not elected by a vote among the players, but appointed from above. The man selected was experienced defenseman Evgeny Varlamov, a summer signing from Metallurg Magnitogorsk. The alternative captains will be Andrei Nikitenko and Mikhail Varnakov
As for Spartak, their new leader was chosen by a secret ballot among the players. Oleg Piganovich (pictured) will captain the team for the regular season, while Oleg Gubin and Ivan Baranka will be alternative captains.
Konstantin Glazachev struck four goals in the Traktor vs. Metallurg Magnitogorsk clash, which his team won 4-3 in overtime. As a treat for the fans, games in this tournament are followed by a shootout and in tonight’s series the deciding goal was scored by none other than Glazachev.
Ufa men beat Czechs again
The Gagarin Cup holders have played the second game of their training trip in the Czech Republic, a lively encounter against local club HC Kladno. By the 9th minute the Ufa men had already raced to a 2-0 lead (Igor Grigorenko and Viktor Kozlov with the goals) but the hosts battled back fiercely, leveled the scores and even took the lead. However, two more goals late in regulation time, from Grigorenko again and Maxim Sushinsky, secured a 4-3 victory for Salavat. The game-winner came just 44 seconds before the final siren. Salavat Yulaev’s net was guarded by Vitaly Kolesnik for the second game running.
Try somewhere else
Olivier Magnan-Grenier and Stephen Dixon, both on tryouts at Dinamo Minsk, are leaving the club. KHL fans may remember Dixon from last season, when he wore the colors of Amur Khabarovsk. In 47 outings he scored 7 goals and made 10 assists.
To the Lion’s den
The KHL’s newest team, Lev, has three new players. The Slovak club has signed contracts with Rafael Akhmetov, Andre Hult and Jiri Sekac. Of the trio, only Akhmetov has experience of the KHL – a mere 6 minutes and 54 seconds of one game for Neftekhimik back in the 2008-09 season. Hult played in Russia’s lower league, the VHL, while Czech teenager Sekac returns from minor league teams in America.
Quote of the day
“Another important factor is that he speaks English, and that should help communication between us,” – Torpedo head coach Kari Jalonen, on the appointment of Evgeny Varlamov as captain.
